COSMO-SkyMed is the Italian Space Agency constellation of four radar satellites for Earth observation. Commercial, governmental and military use of COSMO-SkyMed will be commissioned to the industry by both the Italian Space Agency and the Ministry of Defense.
The radar satellite constellation will consist of four medium-sized satellites with global coverage of our planet. Observations of an area of interest will be repeated several times a day.
Each of the four satellites is equipped with synthetic aperture radar sensors, and capable of high resolution real time operation in all visibility conditions.
These innovative characteristics will enable COSMO-SkyMed to work effectively, even in extreme usage conditions, facilitating the applications of:
- Ecological monitoring
- Natural disaster and environmental prevention and management
- Forestry and agricultural resources monitoring and management
- Ice monitoring
- Marine and inland water monitoring and management
- Technical cartography.
As part of the program, Telespazio is building all ground infrastructures, including:
- orbit control systems
- data reception and processing systems.
The launch of the COSMO-SkyMed program is a joint effort of Telespazio, Alenia Spazio and other companies of the Finmeccanica Group.
COSMO-SkyMed can play an important role in homeland security, as the system can provide coverage of border areas and also monitor sensitive sites and facilities.
Because of the rapid refresh rate and high resolution, the system can assist in surveillance activities and the SkyMed imagery combined with other photographic satellites.
Telespazio offers a wide range of services to support COSMO-SkyMed.
