Alenia Aeronautica Delivers the First Boeing 787 Dreamliner Horizontal Stabiliser

ROME --- Alenia Aeronautica, a Finmeccanica company, has delivered to Boeing the first horizontal stabiliser of the new 787 Dreamliner, manufactured at its Grottaglie plant.
The stabiliser has been transferred from Foggia to the Grottaglie Airport, where it has been loaded onboard the Dreamlifter, a 747, ad-hoc modified by Boeing. The Dreamlifter has arrived for the second time at Grottaglie Airport to transport the stabiliser to Everett for assembly on the 787 prototype.
The horizontal stabiliser, consisting of 2 monolithic cocured boxes and a central junction base, is 20 metres long and, like the 787 fuselage and wings, is made of carbon fibre materials. The cocured box of the 787’s horizontal stabilizer produced in Foggia is to date the biggest composite monolithic structure ever built for a commercial airplane and is manufactured in a one-shot autoclave polymerization cycle starting from 27 wet uncured components.
This is Alenia Aeronautica’s proprietary technology and represents an innovative production process making Foggia one of the most important plants in the world for composite material production.
This delivery completes the first set of components made by Alenia Aeronautica for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the most technologically advanced aircraft in commercial aviation. Alenia Aeronautica, that manufactures 14% of the 787 structure, Italy’s ever bigger share in a commercial jet airplane programme, had delivered to Boeing last March 22nd the two fuselage sections, the central one, no. 44 (8,5 metres long) and the central-rear one, no. 46 (about 10 metres long).
